Beer Belly Baloney
Beer has calories and calories make you fat, right? That seems to be the prevailing wisdom and there’s good reason for it. It sounds like it makes sense. Even so, beer drinkers may have cause to rejoice, because a “beer belly” might not have anything to do with beer at all.
Some studies have shown that the so-called beer belly is not a result of beer consumption. In fact, the research indicated that there was no link between beer and obesity. So, what gives?
The simple answer is that there are all kinds of things that cause people to gain weight and the empty calories contained in beer are just one of those things – and a small one at that. Most people gain weight from a lack of exercise combined with bad eating habits.
The harsh reality when it comes to having a large stomach, as opposed to general weight gain, is that people who sport a beer gut may just be genetically predisposed to getting them.
Beer bellies (flopped) aside, that does not mean beer won’t cause weight gain. The studies were directed specifically at the phenomenon of beer bellies, but concluded that those who consumed more beer generally put on more weight than those who drank less – only not necessarily around the waist, and not to the point of obesity.
