Healthy(ier) New Year’s Jello Shots

Aside from a New Year’s kiss, taking a shot or having a drink when the ball drops may be the most popular New Year’s tradition in the world. There’s just something about ringing in a new year full of new possibilities with family and friends and celebrating with a sweet treat! If your shot of choice is a Jell-O shot, check out these healthy alternatives!

A traditional Jell-O shot is made from flavored gelatin, boiling water, vodka or rum, sugar and cold water. However, there are a variety of fun and tasty ways to spruce up your shots for a night to remember!

Go sugar-free. Instead of using granulated sugar in your Jell-O mixture, try using a sugar substitute like Stevia, Sweet’N Low or no sugar at all. Depending on the alcohol you choose, the shot should still be sweet without adding extra sugar, as there is sugar in alcohol.

Add real fruit. A great way to add sweetness without processed sugar is by adding real fruit to your Jell-O shots. Small pieces of strawberry, cherry or raspberries will taste amazing in the middle of your shots. Mix and match or coordinate your fruit with the flavor Jell-O you choose.

Choose a low-calorie alcohol. You’re in luck, because hard liquors typically have less calories than wine and beer. For Jell-O shots, use a shot of rum, vodka or tequila, which usually ring in at about 70 calories per shot.

While liquor has fewer calories than wine or beer, it is also more potent. Make sure to drink responsibly this New Year’s for an exciting night that you’re sure to remember.
