The Temperance Movement of the 19th and 20th centuries encouraged moderation or complete abstinence from consuming alcohol. Leaders blamed many of society’s problems on drinking, including health issues, poverty and crime. After a rich history of temperance, prohibition and socialization, alcohol has grown into a booming industry, particularly the current craft beer movement.
However, recent media coverage suggests that a modern-day temperance movement is in the works. With government regulations on alcohol and the rise of anti-drunk-driving materials, experts suggest that a form of temperance may be on the rise across the globe. Others believe that the temperance movement never died, but was just waiting in the wings to tackle new issues, such as the debate over the legalization of marijuana. While we don’t believe social drinking is going anywhere, let’s check out some of the best alcohol-free drink recipes for your temperance-minded friends!
Virgin Cucumber Mojito
Perfect for summer time, you’ll need a mojito-flavored dry beverage packet, cold water and one cucumber, peeled and sliced, for this recipe. Dissolve your flavor packet into a pitcher of cold water, and add the cucumber slices and ice for a refreshing, alcohol-free drink! Easily spice up your own glass with a shot of rum.
Virgin Pomegranate Sangria
You can use this trick for any sangria recipe — all you have to do is replace the wine with your favorite fruit juice (and a club soda if you miss the fizz)! For this recipe, you’ll need one quart of pomegranate juice, two cups of papaya or mango juice, one orange, eight strawberries, two kiwis, one mango or papaya and ½ cup of sugar. Mix the juices with sugar until it dissolves, and wash and slice fruits into thin pieces. Place all fruit in the liquid and allow it to chill for two hours before serving.
